Shipment of Kumamoto Clams Suspended; Government Requested to Take Measures to Prevent Impostor Shipment

In response to allegations of large-scale mislabeling of imported clams as coming from Kumamoto, Kumamoto Prefecture suspended shipments of fresh clams from the prefecture on August 8. The suspension is scheduled to last for about two months, and the distribution route will be investigated. Governor Ikuo Kabashima requested that the government take measures to prevent mislabeling, such as changing the rules for labeling the place of origin of food products and supporting efforts to clarify traceability (production and distribution history).
