Chinese Authorities Detain Japanese Embassy Official in Beijing; Japanese Foreign Minister Strictly Protests

Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi stated on April 22 that the temporary detention of a staff member of the Japanese Embassy in China in Beijing on April 21 by the Chinese authorities "cannot be tolerated and is absolutely unacceptable. He pointed out that the incident was a clear violation of the Vienna Convention, which stipulates the immunity from arrest of diplomats and the protection of property. He spoke to reporters at the Foreign Ministry.
