On the seventh day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian troops proceeded to encircle at least two major cities, Mariupol in the south and Kharkiv (Kharkiv) in the east. Residential areas were also heavily shelled. The International Criminal Court (ICC) announced the same day that it had opened an investigation into war crimes committed by Russia.
