UN Human Rights Office Releases Assessment of Human Rights Concerns in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region

UN Human Rights Office Announces Serious Human Rights Violations by the Chinese Government against Uyghurs and Others

GENEVA - On August 31, 2022, the UN Human Rights Office released an assessment of human rights concerns in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

He noted that serious human rights violations against Uyghurs and others are being committed by the Chinese government in the name of countering terrorism and extremism.

This assessment was initiated in response to serious allegations of human rights violations against Uyghurs and other Muslim-dominated communities that have come to the attention of the UN Human Rights Office and the UN Human Rights Mechanism since late 2017, particularly in relation to the Chinese government's policies and measures to combat terrorism and "extremism".
